I have decided to seek election to the Circuit Court Judicial Bench in the 4th Circuit. I do not seek this position lightly nor do I see it as an opportunity to elevate my status in the community. Faith in God has always directed my path, and after working 14 years at the Public Defender’s Office, I feel duty bound to use my legal knowledge to make a difference in the community.
I am not a novice when it comes to the workings of the justice system. While obtaining my Juris Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University, I worked as a mediator for the juvenile division. During the same period, I completed a research project about gangs in Florida. The findings were an eye opener to me and they reconfirmed my conviction to get involved and not to be a bystander in the community, commenting on the shortcomings of our system without taking a stand or committing myself to a worthy cause was not an option.
After obtaining my law degree in 1993, I joined the Broward County Public Defender’s office. By 1995, I was trying felony cases. Although I found it rewarding working for the public, I decided to investigate the world of private practice. My aim was to connect to my clients on a closer, personal level, and thus family law and juvenile cases became my specialties.
In 1997, I rejoined the Public Defender’s Office but this time in Duval County. I realized that there was a greater need for persons of my aptitude within the public system. There was a demand for lawyers who viewed their clients as something other than a case number, and I knew that this is where my true calling lay.
As an attorney in the Public Defender’s Office, I have tried over 70 cases ranging from third degree felonies to capital cases. Being familiar with all aspects of the judicial system is important to me; hence I have worked in all areas in the office. I was a division chief for several years and supervised up to four attorneys at a time. I am a death qualified capital attorney. As a senior attorney, I feel compelled and privileged to be able to consult with any lawyer with legal questions.
